Thai Tradition in Bloom A Hands-on Cultural Experience for Students

When we think of Thai culture, few symbols are as graceful and meaningful as the Phuang Malai the traditional Thai flower garland. Carefully crafted with fragrant blossoms like jasmine, rose, and crown flowers, it represents respect, blessing, and beauty.

This week, Sriwangying had the honor of being invited by Ruamrudee International School (RIS) to lead a Flower Garland Workshop for their students. This activity is part of the school's mission to help students experience and appreciate Thai culture firsthand.

A Class That Combines Culture, Creativity, and Concentration

During the workshop, students from various age groups joined together with curiosity and enthusiasm. With guidance from our skilled instructors, they learned about:

The cultural significance and history of Thai garlands

Types of flowers used in royal-style garlands

Step-by-step techniques for garland threading

The symbolism behind different garland shapes and arrangements

Each student worked with care and concentration, threading each flower with intention. The room was filled with laughter, wonder, and the sweet scent of jasmine. Some students even expressed how calming and meditative the activity felt.

"I didnt know I could do this! Im going to give this to my mom, one student shared, beaming with pride at their first finished garland."

Thai Soft Power in Action

Phuang Malai is more than just a craft its an extension of Thailands soft power, representing the elegance and emotional depth of Thai culture on the world stage.

By allowing students to create something with their own hands, this workshop nurtures cross-cultural understanding, fine motor skills, and a deep appreciation for Thai tradition all in one enriching experience.
